Welcome to the Rotary Club of Buxton
![]()
We are part of Rotary International (video clip) - the world's largest service organisation for business/professional people, with over 1,200,000 members in 200 countries. Our Club President, Ian Saunders, and all our members, extend a warm welcome to all visiting Rotarians and guests.
Rotary Clubs chartered prior to 1923 can meet fortnightly. We do, except in December when we have only our Charter Anniversary Dinner. We also hold some special events when partners and guests are invited, and we undertake various service, social, fun and fund-raising Activities. Members' wives are invited to join the Inner Wheel Club of Buxton. It meets monthly at the Lee Wood Hotel, and with us annually. Please contact our Club Secretary for additional information.
Buxton, bordering the Peak District National Park, is a tourist centre. It has many excellent hotels, restaurants and an Opera House, which is internationally famous for its annual Buxton Festival & Fringe (July) and Gilbert & Sullivan Festival (August). To check on our current weather - a prudent thing to do if visiting us - click Climate.

Last Meeting: 12/11/2008 Topic: End Polio Now - Rtn Mike Yates
Mike Yates, chairman of District 1050's sub-Committee on Polio Eradication, organised an RIBI Group to help with a mass vaccination exercise in Lucknow, India targeting two areas where there had been a resurgence of polio – Utttar Pradesh and Bihar. The RIBI group consisted of 16 Rotarians and relatives from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Hampshire and Kent, with Mike District 1050. Divided into six teams rotating between different booths, they helped community health workers in 18 different areas. On that one National Immunisation Day (NID), Lucknow alone had 2,728 polio booths and 1,711 house-to-house teams; 822,211 children were immunised. Mike returned to India at the beginning of October for another NID.
